# What is AI?
AI, or Artificial Intelligence, refers to computer systems designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. This includes things like understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions, solving problems, and learning from experience. Rather than being explicitly programmed for every possible scenario, many modern AI systems learn patterns from large amounts of data.
There are different types of AI you’ll encounter. **Narrow AI** (or “weak AI”) is designed for specific tasks—like voice assistants (Siri, Alexa), recommendation systems (Netflix, YouTube), spam filters, or chatbots like ChatGPT. This is the AI that exists today. **General AI** (or “strong AI”) would match or exceed human intelligence across all domains, but this remains theoretical and doesn’t currently exist.
A major subset of AI is **machine learning**, where systems improve their performance by analyzing data rather than following fixed rules. Within that, **deep learning** uses neural networks (loosely inspired by the human brain) to handle complex tasks like image recognition and natural language processing. Large language models like ChatGPT are a recent development that use deep learning trained on massive text datasets to generate human-like text responses.
