# What is the Share Market?
The share market, also known as the stock market or equity market, is a platform where shares (also called stocks) of publicly listed companies are bought and sold. A share represents partial ownership in a company. When you buy shares of a company, you become a shareholder and own a small portion of that business. For example, if a company has issued 1 million shares and you own 100 shares, you own 0.01% of that company. The share market allows companies to raise capital by selling shares to the public, and it allows investors to own pieces of multiple businesses and potentially profit from their growth. In India, the two primary stock exchanges are the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), where thousands of listed companies’ shares trade daily.
The primary purpose of the share market is price discovery and capital formation. Companies that want to expand, modernize facilities, or invest in new projects can raise funds by going public—offering shares to the general public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Investors benefit by purchasing these shares at lower prices and potentially selling them at higher prices as the company grows, thereby making a profit. Additionally, many companies pay dividends to shareholders—regular payments made from company profits—providing investors with an income stream. The share market also serves as an indicator of economic health; indices like the Sensex (30 major companies on BSE) and Nifty 50 (50 major companies on NSE) reflect overall market sentiment and economic conditions.
To participate in the share market, you need to open a Demat (dematerialized) account and a trading account with a registered broker or financial institution. The Demat account holds your shares electronically, while the trading account is used to buy and sell shares. You can place orders during market hours—typically 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM on weekdays—through your broker’s platform. Share prices fluctuate based on company performance, economic conditions, industry trends, and investor sentiment. For instance, if a company announces strong quarterly earnings, its share price typically rises; conversely, negative news can cause prices to fall. Risk is inherent in share investing: while successful investments can generate substantial returns, poor investment choices or market downturns can result in losses.
