The capital of India is New Delhi. It serves as the seat of all three branches of the Indian government: the executive, legislature, and judiciary. New Delhi is technically a district within the larger metropolitan area of Delhi, which is officially known as the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.
New Delhi was designed by British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker and was officially inaugurated as the capital in 1931, replacing Calcutta (now Kolkata), which had served as the capital during earlier British colonial rule. After India gained independence in 1947, New Delhi remained the capital of the newly formed nation.
Today, New Delhi houses key government landmarks such as the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s residence), the Parliament House, and the Supreme Court of India, making it the political and administrative heart of the country.
