The duration of the lunar eclipse will be just over five and a half hours, with the action beginning around 9:23 p.m. ET on Aug. 27, when the partial eclipse begins and Earth’s shadow starts to cover the moon. The peak arrives around midnight Eastern time. Maximum eclipse occurs at 12:13 A.M. That reddish hue itself comes down to atmospheric physics. As the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow, sunlight still reaches it indirectly — bent and filtered through our atmosphere. The Earth’s atmosphere scatters a bit of sunlight toward the moon, giving it a reddish hue. Sharp-eyed observers might also catch a subtler effect: around the time of greatest eclipse, look for a pale, turquoise band between the bright penumbral sliver and the reddened disk, a hue caused by sunlight filtered by the stratospheric ozone layer, which absorbs red light.
This eclipse also carries some historical pedigree. This upcoming eclipse is a member of Saros 138, with the previous eclipse in the series occurring on August 16, 2026, and the next taking place on September 7, 2044. And in terms of rarity, don’t expect to see something this dramatic again soon: this event will be the first deep partial lunar eclipse anywhere in the world since Sept. 18, 2024, and the last until Jan. 11-12, 2028, when only 2.4% of the moon will be in Earth’s umbral shadow.
For anyone with clear skies and a view of the Moon, this is a rare enough spectacle to step outside for. No equipment, no planning beyond checking the local moonrise time — just look up.
